Who we are

Casa da Imagem

Casa da Imagem (House of Image) (CI-FML) is an artistic and educational centre, where media and visual literacy can be learned and explored by the community. CI-FML is part of a Foundation, Fundação Manuel Leão, a private, non-profit entity with public interest status, and is, therefore, committed in pursuing its goals and mandate. The Foundation organises its activities and initiatives in Vila Nova de Gaia since 1996 and its main purpose is the promotion of public good through the educational, cultural, artistic and socio-charitable domains. It was from the intersection of the two central pillars of the Fundação Manuel Leão, education and art, that Casa da Imagem emerged in 2011, offering a space of education and artistic activities, initiatives and endeavours.

António Fernandes de Sá Group of Schools

The António Fernandes de Sá Group of Schools is located in the parish of Oliveira do Douro, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, near the south bank of the Douro River, and includes 5 school buildings. The educational offer covers Pre-School Education and Basic Education (1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles): Escola Básica Escultor Fernandes de Sá (2nd and 3rd cycles); Escola Básica do Outeiro (1st cycle); Escola Básica Manuel António Pina (Pre-School and 1st cycle); Escola Básica de Gervide (Pre-School and 1st cycle) and Jardim de Infância da Formigosa (Pre-School).

The school population is characterised by the cultural and social differences that are structuring the region. If on the one hand the low schooling of families and the consequent low expectation of schooling characterises a part of the local population, on the other hand there is a new influx of population, as a result of the supply of new housing, in the border area with the city of Gaia, with privileged access both to the centre of Gaia and to the centre of Porto.

There are around 1420 students, from 3 to 16 years old, currently attending the different schools. The schools that make up the Agrupamento are inclusive, serving children and young people with special educational needs of a permanent nature (e.g. Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Trisomy 21), children from ethnic minorities (Gypsy ethnicity), refugee children, immigrants from various backgrounds and also ex-emigrants (children who have emigrated with their parents or were born outside the country and have started to return).

Gabrovo Municipality

The strategic goal of the Municipality is the conduction of policies which turn Gabrovo into a modern European city, protecting its traditional crafts and cultural heritage. One of the main priorities is the attraction and investment of European funds for solving problems in infrastructure, raising the quality of life, social, cultural, tourist and urban environment.

Gabrovo is among the district centres in Bulgaria with very well-defined industrial profile. Traditionally, the manufacturing has had more than 60% share of the overall production value in the city. Half of the employed in the private sector, as well as more than half of the value added in the local economy are concentrated in the processing industry.

Gabrovo is often referred to as the city of the first things. In Europe and around the world we are known for our sense of humour, thriftiness, entrepreneurship and ingenuity. These emblematic qualities turned us into a Capital of Humour, with typical city anecdotes translated into German, English, French, Russian and even Japanese, that have been travelling for years around the world. As of 2017 Gabrovo is designated by UNESCO for Creative City of Crafts and folk arts and is a member of Agenda 21 as a Pilot City.
